The new reality of the editable self is a profound observation. People have always been able to reinvent themselves, physically, professionally and personally, but it used to take real work. So the results were something that we could readily grok and appreciate. Is it a cheat? Is it still real? I think the AI musing takes it pretty far afield from what will happen (buying selves, fluidity in careers, relationships, etc.), though it's right that the pendulum will return to authenticity, and you're right, a return to old time values.
